1. Период, за который организация составляет отчетность; как правило, равен одному году. За этот период составляются отчеты о прибылях и убытках (profit and loss accounts) (или отчеты о доходах и расходах (income and expenditure accounts)) и балансы (balance sheets), отражающие состояние компании на день окончания периода. Часто закон требует публикации этой отчетности. Однако во многих случаях компании в целях повышения эффективности текущего управления составляют отчетность за более короткие промежутки времени, например за месяц, квартал или полугодие.
2. Налоговый период, установленный законами о налогообложении. Для некорпорированных предприятий это период, за который они составляют отчетность. Для компаний этот период в целом такой же, за исключением тех случаев, когда их отчетный период превышает двенадцать месяцев и его требуется разбить на два или несколько периодов продолжительностью двенадцать месяцев каждый, кроме последнего.
